Five Minutes

I have five minutes left for lunch-thought I would post. I am working tomorrow also, Kindergarten-yay! I have come to a decision-no 6-7-8 grades-period. I know I sound like a crackpot (do crackpots admit they're crackpots?), but honestly this AM did me in for those grades. No movies were shown except to 5th graders and it was one I enjoyed-Wynton Marsalis, but instead worksheets on opera, lots of em were done in class. The first class was 7th grade and let me tell you, despite being forewarned, it was awful-for some reason this class had about 12 boys and 3 girls and how I pitied the girls today. Just behavioral problems all around-8th grade wasn't much better. when did kids become so rude? Anyway, the nut I am, marched down to the middle school office (the sub department) and left a note for Mrs. ________ who is in charge. No middle school, with the exception of the 5th grade I already said I would take-period. They can say I am fussy whatever, I don't have to be there and won't subject myself to it if I don't have to.

I'm not a strict teacher, but I'm not their buddy either. Music is an "art" course they are made to take and apparently, most hate it. Several told me "I am not doing this assignment"-to which I answered "Okay, don't do it-doesn't matter to me-as long as you sit there quietly, I don't care if you pick your toes the whole class period". Yes, they tested me, I didn't break, but decided I don't want another day of being tested-give me the little kids any day.

I hated subbing in the middle school grades but that is where they kept me most of the time.

Good for you! If you don't have to sub grades you don't like, don't!

oh boy do I know how you feel as the mother of 14 year old (8th grade) twin daughters. I keep asking myself the same thing...when did they get so rude???!!?
That's my biggest complaint of being a mother to kids this age...their smart-ass mouths.
I don't blame you one bit for not wanting to sub those grades.

I hear you but I must be getting used to them now 'cause I look forward to subbing with the 7th and 8th grade, especially science, which I'll be doing tomorrow! Maybe I'm a crackpot too?

I like middle school kids but luckily out here they are pretty well behaved , atleast not rude - just very playful! But I love kinder garten kids ...just adorable and they totally love their teachers so sincerely ! that's what I love best about them .

After reading the posts by you and Bron about subbing, I am thankful I did not apply to be a substitute teacher this year.
Some classes seem to be worse than others. One year we nominated the 6th grade teacher for Teacher of the Year simply because of all of the crap he had to endure that year. Anyone who could survive that year definitely deserved some recognition.

I wonder if it would get better once they know you a bit. I don't blame you for not wanting to subject yourself to that. Kids can be awful sometimes, especially when they aren't your own and you can't send them to the corner for being naughty.

Crazy! The kids here seem to reserve their most rude behaviour for high school. The middle school kids were really pretty mild when I used to work in the library.

I hope they comply with your wishes to stick with the younger kids from now on.

Good luck.

my son also refuses to teach the middle school classes, says the agrevation is just not worth it for 115.00 a day, he will do some high school , but mostly is in the elementary grades as this is what he has his degrees in anyways. i think the kids who think they are such bad asses do this just to agrivate you and make you lose your cool, hang in there hon, stick with your guns and only teach where you want to hugs
