It has been brought to my attention that:

1) First grade isn't much fun because the teacher talked all day about rules and no learning happened.

2) Going to the bathroom in first grade is still just as bad as going in kindergarten. We can hold our pee all day long, even if we had to go since we arrived at school. Now, to make matters worse, in first grade, you need a bathroom pass-which seems like a lot of work.

3) New bus companies mean that the buses will be at least 1/2 an hour late dropping the kids off-as a parent we are supposed to know this and be okay with this. Of course, none of the parents knew, so panic ensued.

4) If possible, it would be preferable to go back to kindergarten, thank you very much.

5) Homework is given every night Monday through Thursday-my dd finds this to be a good thing.

6) Detention is given starting in first grade.

7) First grade really stinks compared to kindergarten, although she now has her own desk and a math book.

I had that happen with the bus company before. The worst time was when they were more than an hour late. No notice, we were just supposed to know.

Detention? What could they be doing in 1st grade to get detention?

Em starts tomorrow.

Life according to a first grader is enlightening, isn't it?

Evidently, if they misbehave they are given check marks. 3 check marks-no recess, 4 check marks-call to parents, 5 check marks detention, 6 check marks-visit to the principal. I assume these are all in one day. However, on days they are good they get a "ticket" and the tickets are then collected for educational prizes. Elena was a little bored with the endless rules, not because she doesn't like rules, but because it seemed all the teacher talked about was what they should and shouldn't do in class and she didn't seem to teach much.

Its good Elena isnt stubborn with the rules. I didnt like the bathroom rule, I remember I had a problem with that when I was in grade 1 and 2...

Fun is when the special ed preschool bus is 1 hour late, and the school doesn't know where it is. Just as I was looking up the police dept number for non 911 calls, it comes down the block. My poor son had to go so badly, cause the ride was so long, and the roads so bumpy.

Tell Elena it gets better! She'll have hours of homework soon enough and only a few minutes of rules, all summed up as DON'T EVEN THINK OF IT!

It is hard, going from to K to the 1st grade. My son started 2nd grade this year and he comes home every night with homework. I have 2 high school kids as well and they never have homework......hmmmm. Don't get it.

Rules schmules! =)

Wishing Elena all the best of luck! My nephew was excited about school this year because he gets to go outside for recess 2 times instead of 1 and that makes it all the better!

DETENTION?!?!?! Oh my... Have you read the new newsweek article about "The New First Grade?" It's about how schools are pushing kids too hard.

Ahh, welcome to educational transitions. My 5th graders are adjusting to a new building, new expectations, lockers, and the dreaded demerit system. It sounds like the first week I had with my kiddos - a lot of rules, and not a lot of academics. This week we cracked down and got to teaching. Now the kids are going through another round of adjustment - how 5th grade teaching goes. These kids are like bouncy balls - they just spring back!
