And Furthermore

The thing with Elena and the school-the more I thought about it, the madder I got. I discussed it with them there and they were like "okay, it'll be done right tomorrow" and then I got home and I thought-WTF-I sign her in on the attendance sheet and they didn't realize during a 3 hour class that a child was missing? The school called me back and explained they take attendance in one big classroom and then divide the kids up in their groups to take them to their courses. Roll isn't taken after that.

I calmly explained that the teachers don't know their students or their names, so they should have some sort of name sheet they can follow. Granted, perhaps the teached would have thought Elena was absent, but if my name is signed in next to hers, that means she should be there. Elena isn't a wandering around kid, but lots of them are and it's easy to see something, walk away to the woods (surrounded by woods), etc. I also explained that she was a six year old child, not a teenager, not a young adult, a child, little kid, etc.

They then said what excellent security the college has. Well, that's fine, but if I am walking in the quad and holding a child's hand, most would assume it was my child. No one comes up and questions "is that your child". In this day and age, this is security?

It has been decided they are going to redesign their sign in/sign out procedures, as well as roll calling in the classroom, which is fine. He later told me the other teacher had penciled in Elena's name for being in the class-my response was, of course she did, you had to make sure she paid for the class-it wasn't for roll call or anything. Sheesh....

I asked him if he had children and guess what his answer was????? C'mon it's only two letters.

Watch out or they will hire you to reorganize the camp with children safety in mind. Good for you for staying on top of that.

Good for you, you know; maybe that's an idea Wendy has...

Good for you. It is parents like you that make it safer for the other children whose parents don't pay attention.

Go Deneen! I can not believe that they would have such lax rules and policies and procedures, especially when there are younger kids involved! High schoolers and middle schoolers are one thing, but elementary age kids are another! They are often so trusting, and in this day and age with all you hear about...you would think that they would rather be over zealous than lax!

OMG I woudl be fuming. Horribly mad, I am mad and she isn't my kid.
That's no way to handle the children parents have entrusted themn to let alone paid money for the classes.

There are so many things wrong with that situation that I don't know if I'd yank her out of the classes, or jump their asses for their complete lack of concern. I'm glad you stood up and said what needed to be said, and I'm really hoping they take what you say and DO something...you know...like pay attention to where the kids are?

Holy cow I would be so pissed if it were my child! What kind of place in this day and age doesn't pay attention to where a six year old child is or any child for that matter. Makes me mad thinking about it.

Gag! That is terrible!! Awful!! Totally unacceptable! Who teaches these classes, college professors or people used to working with younger children? Either way that is appalling. It's a good thing that Elena is more intelligent than the supposed adults in charge over there!

Deneen, was it done right today? You know how I think so I probably don't have to go into details. Do I, huh?

Kudos to you for remaining calm, I would have bitch slapped the guy.
